Career Change: Five Ways to Overcome your Fears

WIf you are
thinking about changing jobs or careers, chances are you have encountered a number of fears and
doubts which stand in your way of even beginning the process. Many people will remain in jobs that
they do not like, or even hate, because of these fears. There are things you can do right now to
overcome these defeating thoughts and move yourself into a position of action rather than inertia.
Here are some suggestions:
Tip Number One:
Challenge Your Beliefs
Our beliefs can be so powerful that we accept them to be the truth. Identify what beliefs are
holding you back. How many of these sound familiar to you? “You are too old.” “You don’t have enough
experience.” “You are not qualified to do anything else.” “You can’t afford to change jobs.” Once
you have identified what beliefs are holding you back, you can now begin to really challenge them.
Play devil’s advocate and imagine all of the reasons each belief is not true. Make a list for each
belief. This list is something you can review and revisit every time these fears and beliefs creep
into your head. You will begin to see that your beliefs are not always the truth.
Tip Number Two:
Research and Learn
What is your passion? What are you interested in doing? Whatever it is, take a small step toward
learning more about it. Take a class, join a group, read a book, volunteer for an organization . . .
Whatever you decide to do, remember you are not committing to anything. Don’t allow yourself to
become too preoccupied at the beginning with the question of how you could make this happen as a
career for you. You are merely researching and gathering information. This research phase will allow
you start moving in a forward direction and give you a greater sense of control over your
situation.......

People place a premium on being
positive. That extends to career advice. As a result, I believe that important negative statements
go unsaid. I’ll remedy that here.
Many people fail to land a good job
because they’re lazy, yes lazy. Psychotherapists may make those people feel better by labeling their
laziness “fear of failure” or blaming it on their good-for-nothing parents, but I’ve concluded that
most of the time, the core reason people don’t land a good job is laziness.......

 Rx For More Nurses

The Gordon
and Betty Moore Foundation has donated $5.5 million dollars to the nursing program of a California
university to create an endowed faculty position and an accelerated, 18 month nursing program for
honor students.
San Jose
State University, in San Jose, California is the recipient. In the middle of the nursing shortage
further exacerbated by California’s new nurse ratio laws SJSU had been forced to cut the number of
new nursing students from 90 to 60. Nursing has been a popular program in an area that has suffered
more then it’s share of unemployment due to it’s status as “the capital of Silicon Valley.” Budget
cuts in the Golden State have caused California educational institutions to roll back nursing
programs just when the need has become more acute and the supply of willing students has increased.
Consequently
this grant comes at a great time for SJSU. The foundation has announced plans to donate a total of
$110 million.

 Ahead-of-the-Pack Resumes

These resume
tips have helped my clients find good work:
An employer usually decides whether to dump a resume within 15 seconds, so those first moments with
your resume better be good.
Make it easy to read. The busy employer is relieved to see a resume that looks easy to read: mostly
bullets with just a few words next to each, and plenty of white space.
After you’ve drafted your resume ask yourself:
· Except for any necessary jargon, could a high school student understand it?
· Even if not paying full attention, will the reader still understand what I wrote and be motivated
to interview me?..........
