Junk Cover Letters Kill Good Resumes
By Teena Rose,Columnist, Public Speaker, & Resume Writer
Too many unprofessional, unfocused, and canned cover letters are floating around the job seeking population. So are you surprised when I tell you that a fair number of hiring managers don't bother reading them?
Although I've seen no official survey on cover-letter readership, it's rumored that approximately 40% of cover letters aren't read. Stock cover letters can kill your job-search efforts, making the task of finding a new position nothing but a treacherous expedition.

Adding to the anxiety for jobseekers comes the question: who's reading them and who is not? You could take the chance of not sending one, but then you'll "diss" those who are expecting a cover letter. The only option is to send one every time to ensure that your resume is always properly represented.
Writing a great letter doesn't have to be hard or take a lot of time. Much like the resume, your cover letter must "sing" to the receiver.......

Great Destinations: Boston By Conrad LopezAugust 10, 2006-I am on a trip this week in the Boston area. What a great place this would be to take a travel nursing assignment. The city is full of things to do. If you are any kind of history buff you could spend your whole 13 weeks just doing that. But of course there is more.
Like, do you like to eat? Does the word lobster make your mouth water? I had a seafood casserole last night that would knock your socks off. Sports fan? Monday night I am going to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox play Detroit. It doesn’t get better then that.
And when you are not working at your travel nurse job you may want to get out of town. I drove about 75 miles down to Cape Cod. Hyannis to be exact. That is where the Kennedy’s have their famous compund. For about $16 I took a ferry for a 2 hour trip to Nantucket Island. This place is paradise! You can shop, go to the beach, eat even more, sip a little of the local brew, (Cisco Whale Tale), or rent a bike and explore the island. That is what I am going to do today. You can make it a day trip or do what I’m doing and rent a bed and breakfast. The weather is great........... Article continues... Your Resume Leaves You Naked By Marty NemkoMost of us look better with clothes on--we can accentuate our good parts and hide the rest.
Alas, your resume lays you bare for all to see. That’s why employers almost always require job applicants to submit one. It enables employers to see all your warts: the gaps in your employment, the downward trend in your employment history, etc
Sure, if your resume is likely to make your target employers swoon, send it on. If not, you’d be wise to play the Hide-the Resume Game, just as a person might want to defer revealing their Buddha-bellied body to a new sweetie until they’d built a relationship.
Even if a job ad requires you to submit one, don’t, unless yours is likely to win first prize in the beauty contest. Let your application stand and fall based on a well-written cover letter. An employer is more likely to keep you in the running ..........Check out Jimmy Sweeney's easy cover letter creator.
