RNs Rank #1 in Job Growth
By American Nurses Association

Washington, DC - The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced yesterday that registered nurses top the list of the 10 occupations with the largest projected job growth in the years 2002-2012. Although RNs have listed among the top 10 growth occupations in the past, this is the first time in recent history that RNs have ranked first. These 10-year projections are widely used in career guidance, in planning education and training programs and in studying long-range employment trends.

"Given the aging of the U.S. population and the increased demand for nursing care, it's not surprising that the growth in RN jobs is skyrocketing," said Barbara A. Blakeney, MS, APRN,BC, ANP, President of the American Nurses Association. "Plus, many of those nurses currently working will be retiring and will need to be replaced in the workforce," she added.

According to the BLS report, there will be more than 2.9 million RNs employed in the year 2012, up 623,000 from the nearly 2.3 million RNs employed in 2002. However, the total job openings, which include both job growth and the net replacement of nurses will be more than 1.1 million.

"These new projections underscore the need to increase our recruitment and retention efforts at the local, state and federal levels," Blakeney said. "If sustained efforts are not made to address the nursing shortage now, both access to and quality of care will be impacted."

After years of steady decline between 1995 and 2000, enrollments in entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs have risen the last three years, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. However, more than 11,000 qualified applicants ....

Finding The Right Company To Meet Your Travel Nursing Goals
By Conrad Lopez

If you flip through any nursing magazine you’ll see an abundance of travel nursing companies to choose from. How do you know which one is right for you? As you research the different opportunities you’ll need to answer a few questions of your own:

1. What is your main objective for travel nursing? There are many reasons nurses choose to take a travel assignment. They may be burned out on their current job and wanting a change, they may want to see a specific region of the country or be close to loved ones and friends, or they may have financial objectives they want to meet. You need to determine your main objective for taking a travel assignment as travel companies will cater to your objectives. If your main goal is to spend time at the ocean, make sure you aren’t scheduled for long hours with overtime. If your main goal is to save enough money for your first house or to help put your son or daughter through college, look for a travel company that gives you higher wages, guaranteed hours with overtime and bonuses. It’s important to know that some travel companies cater to nurses who may want to work fewer hours while other companies cater to nurses who may want to work the extra hours. In addition, some companies will provide loyalty bonuses to nurses who work multiple assignments with them.

2. Do you understand your assignment arrangements? Before accepting a travel assignment make sure you know what is included in the assignment and what you are responsible for. Some companies pay full travel and housing ....................

By by Joan C. Borgatti, RN, MEd

A Bolus of Self Care It's hard to turn around in any bookstore these days without knocking a self-help book off the shelves. Self-care is the buzzword of this decade, because technology has launched our world into hyper speed. Self-care has shown up on our radar screens because there is now a realization that living life at warp speed does not a good life make. Technology, which was supposed to make our lives easier, has provided us with the ability to take on even more work. We work harder and faster, but with a lingering sense that something is missing. And what is missing is often ourselves. It's difficult to live a truly fulfilled life without understanding what our needs are and how to best meet them. And the opposite is also true. If we take good care of ourselves, we have the time to reflect, consider, dream, and act on plans that can bring us fulfillment in our personal and professional lives. Let's look at how we might better care for ourselves......................
